A nice fieldmethods class project site on Kalmyk

Thought this nice site was worth a share:

https://people.umass.edu/scable/LING404-SP16/Kalmyk/

It makes me sad how a lot of data from fieldmethods classes kind of fade away without anything accessible to the wider world; not the case in Seth Cable’s 2016 fieldmethods class on Kalmyk, the westernmost Mongolic language, spoken in Kalmykia.

What I really like about this site is how straightforward it is.

(Settle down, Tom Cruise, that’s exactly what this site does.)

I love this. Make a little website and put it on your .edu server, put up the corpus and student research, link to the media on Google Drive, done. Permanent, accessible archive.

If I were to make one recommendation it would be to add a playable interface for all the great texts. But because the data is very tidy and well-structured, that is definitely something someone could do — in other words, because the data is consistently structured, it has a solid future. And other derivative presentations and analyses of the data are quite feasible.
