While Mary’s situation isn’t for everyone, I really loved her message that you can make your own way in your career, even if it’s unpopular. I found this chat really inspiring and also really real about the challenges of blurring the lines between work and family. Jeff Good also discussed his approach to family and research in episode 13.

(Weird, I had just got done listening to this on my walk when I saw your post, like five minutes earlier. Cosmic. :milky_way:)

This was a really interesting episode. As someone who basically stopped really doing even “easy” diaspora fieldwork when I became a parent, it was inspiring to hear the details about how Mary managed the challenges of parenting while doing fieldwork. Hearing about the travel, the logistics, the healthcare and childcare issues… it just makes my head spin. So much admiration and appreciation for her and her work.

I mean, the part where she says that she was on constant alert for a Dengue mosquito

Right? That was pretty hilarious. One of those skills one wouldn’t necessarily associate with linguistics!
