Helpers wanted: testing Windows/Mac/Linux ASR app

Hi all,

I’ve spent my June working on GitHub - fauxneticien/u2u-asr focusing on 'How to get a user-usable ASR system set up (assuming an ASR model has been trained; more on that later).

I have a prototype that I’ve been able to test on my own machine (M3 Macbook Air) and would like to verify that it works as intended on:

  1. Intel-based Macs
  2. Windows
  3. Linux (less important than 1, 2 but never hurts to verify)

In theory you should be able to use this app on your own computer (i.e. offline and local) as follows to transcribe a Mixtec audio file (will be provided) and produce an ELAN .eaf file

Let me know if you’re up for testing and which platform and I can DM you the Google Drive download link for the app and sample audio file.

Cheers,
Nay

Great, thanks @lgessler ! Will reply back to your e-mail with links!

I can do Windows. I would love to become familiar with this so I can help others use it

Hi there. How difficult would it be for a rank beginner to test it? (I have used ELAN before, but I am not a very tech-savvy person.) Also, does it work on “pre-M” Macs or Macs with M1 chips?

Hi there. How difficult would it be for a rank beginner to test it? (I have used ELAN before, but I am not a very tech-savvy person.)

@Hsouter — I’ll keep you in mind for later testing rounds but for now I’d rather save you the potential headache and have someone else vet it first (so I could potentially diagnose errors with them). Alternatively, if you did want to try it out immediately for a preview, you’d be welcome to do so with the caveat that it may not work just yet. Up to you.

At some point it will be the same as using any other Mac app (download the .dmg file and drag and drop the app into the Applications folder). Currently, it’s not as easy as it should be. Once we get there, it’d be great for you to be one of the testers in that round.

Also, does it work on “pre-M” Macs or Macs with M1 chips?

Yes, it should work with both. Essentially the app is (and has to) be built multiple times, targeting each individual chip/operating system combination (pre-M/Intel chip macOS, M-chip macOS, Intel chip Windows 10, etc.). It’s not a completely unsolved problem (many apps have to do this), but I’m still learning the various steps on how to do it myself for each combination.

This is interesting! I don’t seem to have a lot of time, but I would like to test it as well (but I don’t actually have a Windows or a recent Mac  - if you want to know if it works on an Intel MacBook Pro from 2015 with MacOS 13, I can test that…)

Late to the party but I’m happy to test it and compare it to what we currently have, if it’s useful (can test either mac or pc depending on what you need, pc easier but mac is doable)
