“How to Count Every Language in India”

Hey I got you a link. Pretty interesting article.

Anything but that other topic. Wait, those other topics. Blergh.

  • well, interesting modulo the pop science misunderstandings of the nature of language we seem doomed to see in every popular article about linguistics.

In 2010, Bo, one of the oldest languages in the world, dating to pre-Neolithic times, died along with the last fluent speaker, a woman named Boa Senior who had been living in the Andaman Islands.

Exoticism.

lol wait until they hear about Sentinelese

Hahah yeah, somewhat challenging to count!

The speakers reserve the right not to be counted!

I’m somewhat disappointed by the People’s Linguistic Survey of India. It’s not easily accessible online and the person who runs it, Ganesh Devy, isn’t a linguist so it tends to have very different aims from Grierson’s Survey (which, Orientalism an all withstanding, is the best of its kind so far). Here’s a neat review of it: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/0049085718821783
