šŸ”— SOAS blog: ā€œHarvesting an archival deposit for your linguistics dissertationā€

Something to think about in our day and age.

I was determined to work with primary language data but a one-year degree does not leave much time to execute your own fieldwork, so I decided to ask other people for data they had collected. If language documentation is really about collecting copious amounts of recordings for other researchers to use, most deposits must have plenty of unanalysed data on topics that have not yet been touched. —Jonas Lau

I am currently working with a doctoral student at UH Manoa, who is using my archived collection to write her dissertation. It’s been incredibly fruitful.

That’s awesome @katelynnlindsey. Sometimes one hears stories about linguists being super protective and secretive about their data, but I think for every linguist like that there is another linguist would be thrilled to see someone else work with their data! After all, a language is an infinitely complex thing, there’s always more to be learned.

She’s brilliant! And I love her insights. But also, being the only researcher in an undocumented language family is very lonely! I need someone to talk to!

Haha, I hear that. ā€œWhat do you MEAN you don’t want to talk about this one particular language I am interested in? All day? Forever? WHAT?ā€

I am a bit leery of the term ā€˜harvesting’ but archives are meant to be used!

It just occurred to me that maybe a better term would be ā€œgardeningā€. :herb:

This topic came up in the Melbourne pub ā€œremote fieldworkā€ panel. Apparently there’s an idea that’s been kicked around CELP for the last 50 years or so about having a matchmaker service that connects people with data to people looking for data to work with. @JROSESLA has taken the lead on this a bit trying to see how we could make this work.

CELP has been around since 1992 only  But yes, we’re talking about it and hopefully, we’ll be able to do something along the lines of the original ā€œmatchmakingā€ proposal. That said, it may take a bit of time to get this off the ground; if we do it, we’ll try to do it in a way that takes into account the ethical issues associated with this. Stay tuned!

Haha, I knew CELP wasn’t around that long, but I thought you said it was an old idea

Thank you, Pat! I’ll do that later today. Re: ā€œchong besh!ā€ <3 I’d forgotten about that! I do remember paka yok, though.
