You can now add your languages to your profile

Good morning friends

I just found a way for you to add a list of the languages you are interested in to your user profile. It seems useful to me because it might help people to find each other via this site.

Here’s how to add yours:

Click your avatar/user icon in the upper right corner, then click the little person icon, which will take you to your preferences.

Then click the gear option that says “Preferences”:

Now choose “Profile” in the sidebar and scroll down. You’ll find a Languages field.

It’s a pretty simple mechanism in that you just type a flat comma-delimited string, but any match will show up in the search box. For instance, mine look like this:

So if you try hitting the search icon in the nav bar, and type Kashaya Pomo, you’ll see this:

That bottom tier is matching user profiles, so you can go from there to find another user interested in that language. This field will be required for future signups, but even though it’s optional for current users, it’s homework and you have to do it and it will be on the final.

Super excited about this! I tried to add my languages, but I guess it either did something wrong or it just isn’t showing up for me yet? I followed your instructions and got to the profile page with the About Me and Timezone sections… :eyes:

Hmm odd. Seems to have worked for @Andrew_Harvey? Maybe try reloading with the shift key down to force the browser not to send cached content?

Also, cool list @Andrew_Harvey! Of the ones you lost I have never heard of Alagwa, Burunge, Rangi, Mbugwe, Nyilamba, or Nyaturu… of the others I know about them only because of you and @rgriscom! Are the ones above all Bantu?

Thank youuu ^^ Will try!

Ya! Rangi (or Langi), Mbugwe (or Buwe), Nyilamba, and Nyaturu (or Rimi) are all Bantu. Alagwa (or Wasi), and Burunge are both (South) Cushitic.

How cool is this? New user @amaliaskilton (hi!) just joined, and filled out the language field — now we can find Ticuna in the search box. I hope all the current users take a couple minutes to do this, I feel like it could improve our community a lot.

Intrepid local heroes @ejk & @SarahDopierala have pointed out that this wasn’t working — d’oh! I have twiddled some buttons, try again and see if it works for you now. Let us know either way!

Hooray @ejk!

Had to go and look these up in Wikipedia  Tunen, Nyokon, Ékegusií, Swahili, Zulu, Gorwaa

You have some overlap with @rgriscom and @Andrew_Harvey, no?

Ya!
@ejk wrote a brilliant paper on Gorwaa, using some of the archived data from my fieldwork.
Kerr, Elisabeth J., et al. “(Non-) specificity and case in Gorwaa: the-oo/-(h) ee suffix.” Proceedings of ConSOLE XXVIII (29-31 January 2020, Universitat Pompeu Fabra) (2020): 156-174.

I wouldn’t say brilliant, but yes, I overlapped with Andrew when I was at SOAS (and worked with his excellent Gorwaa corpus Gorwaa: an archive of language and cultural material from the Gorwaa people of Babati (Manyara Region, Tanzania) | Endangered Languages Archive), and then I overlapped with him again + Richard at Leiden! Heard about docling from @rgriscom’s field tech course
