Technologies on Language Documentation (TOLD) Reading Group

Hi all,

My colleague Shobhana Chelliah and I have been organizing a reading group for the students here at IU, and this semester we’re focusing on what we might loosely term “non-technical aspects of language technologies” in language documentation and revitalization. This might cover usability issues, social issues, or other factors impacting the design and implementation of human language technologies in LDR.

Next week we’ll be reading Digital infrastructure and its impacts on language work: A case study of FieldWorks Language Explorer (FLEx) by our own @amaliaskilton, @sunny, and @cbowern!

If you’d like to be added to the mailing list for the reading group, please let me know! We’d love to have more people joining us over Zoom whenever you’re interested in any of the readings. We meet at 10:00am ET (14:00 GMT) every Friday.

How exciting! Can’t make next week but I’m interested to know how your discussion goes.

Very cool! I probably can’t make it either, unfortunately (it’s our mid-semester break and I have an appointment to go to the off-site storage facility to look at some Australian artifact collections and help with metadata) but would love to know what you think!

I teach at 10:30 your time but I’d love to have updates. I may be able to make it for part of the time. I read that paper and it’s a good read!

Please add me! That’s a pretty rough time for me being in Pacific, but I would love the option to join if I can

Could I be on the mailing list? Also probably can’t make the time being on Pacific, but would love to learn more!
